Chadian opposition leader Succès Masra has responded positively to President Déby Itno’s “brotherly hand” extended to him.
Masra declared that he is “ready to work as soon as tomorrow with the President of the Republic to contribute politically in the service of the Chadian people.”
On Tuesday, the leader of Les Transformateurs officially recognised the results of Chad’s recent presidential, legislative, and local elections, marking a turning point in the country’s ongoing political crisis.
In a live address on Facebook, the former transitional prime minister stated that he “acknowledges the results” and reaffirmed his “trust in the republican institutions and in the newly elected President, Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno.”
This move comes after months of political antagonism. Masra, who finished second in the May 2024 presidential election with 18% of the vote, according to official results, had initially claimed victory before boycotting the December 29 legislative and local elections.
Masra had served as Chad’s transitional prime minister following the signing of the Kinshasa Agreement in November 2023, before being dismissed in May 2024. In October 2022, a protest he staged resulted in the deaths of 75 people, according to official figures.
The organisers reported over 300 casualties.
