Tensions are rising following the presidential elections in Chad on Monday, May 6, which pitted ten candidates against each other, including transitional President General Mahamat Deby and Prime Minister Succès Masra. On Wednesday, May 8, the Les Transformateurs party denounced “threats and intimidation” against its candidate, Succès Masra, and his militants.
In a press release signed by its secretary general, Tog-yeum Nagorngar, the party accused political actors of carrying out “very serious” provocations using state resources.
In support of this accusation, the party cites the “permanent drone surveillance of the private residence of its candidate, Dr. Succès Masra.”
On May 7, a video of the prime ministerial candidate’s private residence was posted on the Internet.
The few-second clip, apparently taken by a drone, shows the interior of the courtyard of the home of the minister and Les Transformateurs party candidate in the May 6 presidential election.
A close-up shows a young man entering the residence with a rectangular container that closely resembles a ballot box used in presidential elections.
These images led some netizens to accuse the party of “ballot box stuffing”. The party’s general secretariat denies this.
For the party of Succès Masra, these threats are the orchestrations of “those who are afraid of the truth of the ballot box”.
“Activists of the party Les Transformateurs, of the coalition Justice-Egalité and their sympathizers are threatened and exposed to serious violence, in particular by certain administrative authorities and members of the defense and security forces”, denounces the statement.
