The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will hold an extraordinary summit on February 24th, 2024, in Abuja, Nigeria, with Niger expected to be a key topic of discussion. The summit comes amidst speculation that sanctions imposed on Niger after the military takeover in July 2023 may be lifted.
Sanctions and potential shift
ECOWAS imposed sanctions on Niger after the military ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. However, at its December 2023 summit, the bloc indicated a willingness to ease the embargo if certain conditions were met, including Bazoum’s release and a defined transition timeline.
Recent reports suggest General Abdourahmane Tiani, Niger’s current leader, is open to releasing Bazoum, but the former president reportedly refuses. This development adds further intrigue to the upcoming summit.
Withdrawal from ECOWAS
Adding another layer of complexity, Niger, alongside Mali and Burkina Faso, announced their withdrawal from ECOWAS in January 2024. These countries formed the Alliance of Sahel States, citing abandonment of founding principles by ECOWAS as their reason for leaving.
ECOWAS rejected these claims and declared the withdrawal decisions “null and void.” Despite the tension, the upcoming summit presents an opportunity for dialogue and potential solutions.
