Tragedy struck the Omari community in Mali on December 26: the kidnapping of the Khalife of the Tidjaniya by armed men.
Amadou Hady Tall, the General Khalife of the Tidjaniya, an emblematic figure of spirituality and peace, was abducted by armed individuals in Diabidiala, near Nioro du Sahel.
According to local sources, the kidnapping occurred as the Khalife was leaving a ziara (Quranic reading) in a neighbouring village.
His convoy was intercepted by armed individuals who opened fire on his vehicle, slightly wounding him in the foot.
While the other passengers were released, the Khalife was taken by his captors to an unknown location.
At present, no claim of responsibility has been made, but suspicions fall on Islamist armed groups active in the region.
This attack comes at a time of increasing terrorist activities in the Sahel where moderate religious leaders calling for peace and condemning violence are becoming prime targets.
Amadou Hady Tall, a direct descendant of Thierno Mountaga Tall, is a significant figure of moderate Islam in Mali.
In his last public sermon on September 20, 2024, he strongly condemned terrorism, stating that “Mali will not succumb to terror.”
He also reassured his followers that “the suffering of Malians is drawing to an end.”
These words, spoken during the Maouloud in Nioro, resonate with increased intensity today amidst this uncertainty.
Nioro du Sahel, located near the border with Mauritania, is a strategic region.
It is not only a religious bastion for the Tall family but also an area vulnerable to incursions by armed groups.
The historical rivalry between the religious families of Nioro, particularly that of Amadou Hady Tall and the Sharifian family of Bouyé Haïdara, has further complicated local dynamics.
However, these internal tensions alone do not explain this kidnapping, which appears linked to broader issues.
Although the lack of a claim prevents clear identification of the culprits, the methods used – violent interception, targeted hostage-taking – bear the signature of jihadist groups.
Facing increasing military pressure, these groups are intensifying their actions to spread fear and undermine voices that challenge their legitimacy.
The kidnapping of Cheick Amadou Hady Tall could be seen as retaliation for his public stances.
By calling on youths involved with jihadist groups to disengage from these movements, the Khalife represented an ideological threat to them.
This kidnapping risks further weakening the social fabric in the region. Already tested by instability, the faithful might lose confidence in the authorities’ ability to ensure their safety.
Moreover, this incident underscores the urgency for the Malian government to enhance protection for religious figures, whose influence is crucial for maintaining social cohesion.
The Malian authorities have immediately mobilized security forces to locate the Khalife.
Simultaneously, calls for national and international solidarity have been issued to intensify search efforts.
The General Khalife of the Omari family, Thierno Bachir Tall, has expressed his concern while calling for collective prayers for the safe return of Amadou Hady Tall.
