Mamprusi people of Northern Ghana and Togo

Mamprusi people of Northern Ghana and Togo
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Mamprusi people are a ethnic and historical group in West Africa, residing primarily in northern Ghana and the regions bordering northern Togo. They constitute a core component of the “Mole-Dagbani” linguistic and cultural group. The majority of the Mamprusi inhabit their ancestral territory, known as “Mamprugu”, which is geographically centred in the northeastern region of Ghana—situated between the White Volta River basin and the Nasia River—with smaller communities historically extending into parts of northern Togo.

The origins of the Mamprusi are closely linked to the establishment of the Kingdom of Mamprugu, one of the oldest and most venerable traditional monarchies in West Africa, with roots dating back to the 13th century AD. Oral historical traditions point to a renowned warrior known as “Tohaʒee” (the Red Hunter) as the foundational ancestor of the region’s royal lineages. His most notable descendant, “Naa Gbewaa”, is regarded as the primary architect of the region’s centralised governance and authority; he established himself in the area of ”Pusiga”, which serves as the spiritual and historical cradle for the Mamprusi, Dagomba, and Nanumba peoples. Following the death of Naa Gbewaa, power struggles arose, leading to the relocation of the kingdom’s administrative and political centre—under the leadership of his son and successor, Naa Tohagu—first to the town of Gambaga and subsequently to Nalerigu. Nalerigu later became the permanent seat of their supreme leader, known as the “Nayiri”.

According to ethnic tradition, the Mamprusi are regarded as the “elder brothers” among the various groups descended from Naa Gbewaa, a status that grants them a special symbolic standing among neighbouring peoples.

The social and political structure of the Mamprusi people is characterised by a robust, centralised monarchy that transcends simple tribal boundaries, functioning instead as a comprehensive political and religious institution. At the heart of this system is the “Nayiri”—the supreme leader or traditional king of the Mamprugu Kingdom—who governs from his historic palace in the town of Nalerigu.

The Nayiri wields extensive spiritual and temporal authority; he is viewed not merely as a political ruler but as a living link to the royal ancestors and a figure believed to hold a metaphysical responsibility for the fertility of the land and the well-being of the community. Local administration across the various villages and districts is managed through a network of local chiefs who are subordinate to the central throne. Their roles include overseeing daily affairs, resolving disputes, and organising communal activities. Alongside the royal class, councils of land elders and prominent commoners play pivotal roles that complement royal authority—particularly in the rituals surrounding the installation of leaders and the management of beliefs concerning the land and local deities. This reflects a delicate balance between the power of the monarchs and that of the traditional custodians of the land.

The Mamprusi people speak “Mampruli”, a language belonging to the Gur branch of the Niger-Congo language family. Closely related to neighbouring languages such as Dagbani and Frafra, Mampruli is essential for preserving oral traditions and proverbs, as well as for transmitting social values across generations.

Culturally, the “Damba” festival stands out as one of the most significant annual celebrations for the Mamprusi. Although its historical origins are linked to the Islamic calendar—marking the birth of the Prophet Muhammad—the festival has, over time, acquired a unique local character. It blends religious, traditional military-style displays, and folk dances, all accompanied by the wearing of ornate royal attire.

The local economy of the Mamprusi people is primarily based on subsistence agriculture and animal husbandry, taking advantage of the savanna environment that characterises northern Ghana and Togo. Key agricultural crops include yams, white and yellow maize, millet, and rice, alongside other produce such as okra and peanuts.

Economic roles are distributed according to a traditional division of labour: men typically handle the clearing of land and the preparation of fields—including the cultivation of staple crops like yams—while women play an active role in sowing, harvesting, and transporting crops. Furthermore, women dominate local markets, trading in grains, prepared foods, nuts, and dried fish.

In addition to farming, some members of the population raise livestock, such as goats, sheep, and poultry; those with greater means may own cattle and horses, which serve as symbols of wealth and social status. Local trade and artisanal activities also provide supplementary economic support, helping to invigorate regional markets in towns such as Gambaga and Walewale.

A large segment of the Mamprusi population embraced Islam through trade networks and past migrations. Islam is an integral part of their daily cultural and social fabric; for instance, children are often given Islamic names alongside their traditional local names.

Today, the Mamprusi community faces developmental and economic challenges similar to those experienced in other rural regions of northern Ghana and Togo. High illiteracy rates and inadequate educational infrastructure serve as major obstacles to the economic and social empowerment of younger generations, even as ongoing efforts persist to provide educational materials, religious texts, and linguistic resources in the Mampruli language.

Also, climate change, declining rainfall, and mounting pressure on fertile agricultural land—driven by population growth—are destabilising traditional farming practices. This has prompted some individuals to migrate, either temporarily or permanently, to major cities in southern Ghana in search of alternative employment, all while maintaining their cultural ties and enduring allegiance to the historic Kingdom of Mamprugu.
