Liberian President, Joseph Nyuma Boakai has ordered the immediate suspension of government officials who have not disclosed their assets within a required deadline.
President Boakai last November issued an executive directive, issuing a ten-day deadline by which ministers and other senior officials would comply.
A list of non-compliant functionaries has been revealed by Liberia’s anti-corruption commission with confirmation that they have been suspended for one month without salary.
Their suspension will last until they comply with the directive and submit a declaration of their assets, according to the Liberia Anti-corruption Agency (LACC).
”As part of this directive all suspended officials must immediately turn over government assets to compliant heads of agencies, their designees, or authorized personnel within their respective institutions” said the statement seen by APA.
The 80-year-old made an electoral promise in 2023 to stamp out corruption and introduce transparency in government.
The presidency said Mr Boakai remains committed to good governance, integrity, and the rule of law.
”Public officials are reminded that assets declaration is not only a legal obligation but also a fundamental measure to promote transparency and restore public trust in government institutions” said the statement.
It is President Boakai’s view that non-compliance with asset declaration will undermine his bid to banish corruption and ensure accountability and transparency – ethical standards which will continue to be a priority of his administration.
