Rebels in Ethiopia’s Amhara say they have executed three girls on grounds of “spying for the federal government.”
Asres Mare Damtie, member of the central command of the Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF) was quoted as saying that “the measure was taken as the girls were spying for the enemy.”
The bodies of the victims were found outside of Debre Elias town, East Gojjam zone at Tija Goter Megentey district, according to eyewitnesses.
Demes Alehegne, peace and security office head of the district confirmed the execution of the girls, shot to the head.
According to the district government communication’s office, the victims were identified as Muyanesh Teshome, Kalkidan Alehegne and Melkam Tade.
Damtie said the victims were found sharing information including the whereabouts of the Fano troops, blaming them for the loss of lives and destruction of property by drone attacks in the district.
The Fano said it established the role of the girls through “investigation” and “the execution is meant to send a message for others.”
The Fano also blamed the girls for the attack of a military unit in Denba locality of the region.
