{"id":9463,"date":"2023-10-09T16:28:56","date_gmt":"2023-10-09T16:28:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=9463"},"modified":"2023-10-09T16:28:56","modified_gmt":"2023-10-09T16:28:56","slug":"kenya-court-puts-a-hold-on-police-deployment-to-haiti","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/9463\/kenya-court-puts-a-hold-on-police-deployment-to-haiti\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya court puts a hold on police deployment to Haiti"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-reactid=\".dz7sie3kdi.1.0.1.1.1.1:$post-65242205364b3f1612ec42e5.0.6.0.0:$post_1\">A Kenyan high court has blocked the government\u2019s plans to deploy police officers to <a href=\"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/9223\/kenya-and-haiti-establish-diplomatic-ties\/\">Haiti<\/a> or any other country pending the hearing of a petition.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\".dz7sie3kdi.1.0.1.1.1.1:$post-65242205364b3f1612ec42e5.0.6.0.0:$post_2\">The judge cited issues raised in the application as being of national importance and public interest.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\".dz7sie3kdi.1.0.1.1.1.1:$post-65242205364b3f1612ec42e5.0.6.0.0:$post_3\">One of the petitioners, former presidential candidate Ekuru Aukot said the proposed deployment was unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\".dz7sie3kdi.1.0.1.1.1.1:$post-65242205364b3f1612ec42e5.0.6.0.0:$post_4\">It is argued that there is a question mark over whether regular police can actually be deployed on international assignments.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\".dz7sie3kdi.1.0.1.1.1.1:$post-65242205364b3f1612ec42e5.0.6.0.0:$post_5\">Mr Aukot added the country could not afford to spare 1,000 officers before addressing insecurity at home.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\".dz7sie3kdi.1.0.1.1.1.1:$post-65242205364b3f1612ec42e5.0.6.0.0:$post_6\">Last week ethnic clashes in western Kenya left seven people dead.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\".dz7sie3kdi.1.0.1.1.1.1:$post-65242205364b3f1612ec42e5.0.6.0.0:$post_7\">And recently the coastal region of Lamu has seen attacks from the Somalia-based al-Shabab militant group.
