{"id":9140,"date":"2023-09-17T11:30:54","date_gmt":"2023-09-17T11:30:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=9140"},"modified":"2023-09-17T11:30:54","modified_gmt":"2023-09-17T11:30:54","slug":"mali-niger-and-burkina-faso-sign-sahel-security-pact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/9140\/mali-niger-and-burkina-faso-sign-sahel-security-pact\/","title":{"rendered":"Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso sign Sahel security pact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-0\">Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, three West African Sahel nations ruled by military juntas, signed a security pact on Saturday promising to come to the aid of each other in case of any rebellion or external aggression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-1\">The three countries are struggling to contain Islamic insurgents linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State and have also seen their relations with neighbours and international partners strained because of the coups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-2\">The\u00a0<a class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__inherit-color__3208F text__inherit-font__1Y8w3 text__inherit-size__1DZJi link__underline_default__2prE_\" href=\"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/8806\/what-led-to-the-niger-coup-an-expert-lists-three-driving-factors\/\" data-testid=\"Link\">latest coup in Niger<\/a>\u00a0drove a further wedge between the three and countries of the regional bloc, the Economic Community of West African States, which has\u00a0threatened to use force\u00a0to restore constitutional rule in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-3\">Mali and Burkina Faso have\u00a0<a class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__inherit-color__3208F text__inherit-font__1Y8w3 text__inherit-size__1DZJi link__underline_default__2prE_\" href=\"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/8900\/ecowas-military-intervention-in-niger-could-trigger-3-bad-outcomes\/\" data-testid=\"Link\">vowed<\/a>\u00a0to come to Niger&#8217;s aid if it is attacked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-4\">&#8220;Any attack on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of one or more contracted parties will be considered an aggression against the other parties,&#8221; according to the charter of the pact, known as the Alliance of Sahel States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-5\">It said the other states will assist individually or collectively, including with the use of armed force.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-6\">&#8220;I have today signed with the Heads of State of Burkina Faso and Niger the Liptako-Gourma charter establishing the Alliance of Sahel States, with the aim of establishing a collective defence and mutual assistance framework,&#8221; Mali junta leader Assimi Goita said on his X social media account.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-7\">All three states were members of the France-supported G5 Sahel alliance joint force with Chad and Mauritania, launched in 2017 to tackle Islamist groups in the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-8\">Mali has since\u00a0left the dormant\u00a0organisation after a military coup, while ousted Niger&#8217;s President Mohamed Bazoum said in May last year that the force is now &#8220;dead&#8221;
