{"id":9090,"date":"2023-09-14T08:35:46","date_gmt":"2023-09-14T08:35:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=9090"},"modified":"2023-09-14T08:35:46","modified_gmt":"2023-09-14T08:35:46","slug":"dr-congo-presidential-candidate-jean-marc-kabund-gets-seven-years-in-jail-for-insulting-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/9090\/dr-congo-presidential-candidate-jean-marc-kabund-gets-seven-years-in-jail-for-insulting-president\/","title":{"rendered":"DR Congo presidential candidate, Jean-Marc Kabund gets seven years in jail for insulting president"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-0\">A high court in <a href=\"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?s=Democratic+Republic+of+Congo\">Democratic Republic of Congo<\/a> has sentenced presidential candidate Jean-Marc Kabund to seven years in prison on 12 charges including spreading false rumours and insulting the head of state, his lawyer said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-1\">Kabund was a former vice president of parliament and a close associate of President Felix Tshisekedi who launched his own political party last year after the two fell out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-2\">He has been held in Kinshasa&#8217;s main prison since\u00a0his arrest\u00a0in August 2022, after he called Tshisekedi a &#8220;danger&#8221; and lambasted his government in a speech.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-3\">&#8220;The court sentenced him to four months each for the first nine offences and 16 months each for the last three,&#8221; Kabund&#8217;s lawyer Kadi Diko told Reuters, adding that the most serious offences were &#8220;spreading false rumours&#8221; and &#8220;contempt for head of state and parliament&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-4\">&#8220;This is an extremely harsh decision, especially as there is no appeal,&#8221; the lawyer added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-5\">Kabund was not present for the verdict, but in a hearing last month defended himself and repeated his remarks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-6\">&#8220;I have asked the people to do everything in their power to ensure that Mr Tshisekedi is excluded from the next elections, because I believe that the country is in great danger under his leadership,&#8221; he told the court in August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-7\">Congo is expected to hold a general election on Dec. 20 in which Tshisekedi is likely to seek a second term. Political tensions have been rising ahead of the vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-8\">An opposition spokesman was\u00a0shot dead\u00a0in the capital Kinshasa in July, while opposition parties have held\u00a0violent demonstrations\u00a0denouncing irregularities in voter registration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-9\">Kabund was sentenced by the Court of Cassation, one of Congo&#8217;s highest courts, which does not allow appeals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-10\">He had announced his intention to run for president as head of his &#8220;Alliance for Change&#8221; party in the upcoming vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-11\">&#8220;The presidency is in no way concerned by court decisions,&#8221; said Tina Salama, spokesperson for Tshisekedi. &#8220;It is neither a plaintiff nor a civil party in this case and therefore cannot comment on it.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A high court in Democratic Republic of Congo has sentenced presidential candidate Jean-Marc Kabund to seven years in prison on 12 charges including spreading false rumours and insulting the head of state, his lawyer said on Wednesday.
