{"id":9086,"date":"2023-09-12T12:50:45","date_gmt":"2023-09-12T12:50:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=9086"},"modified":"2023-09-12T12:50:45","modified_gmt":"2023-09-12T12:50:45","slug":"burkina-faso-junta-lifts-radio-stations-suspension-over-niger-coup-criticism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/9086\/burkina-faso-junta-lifts-radio-stations-suspension-over-niger-coup-criticism\/","title":{"rendered":"Burkina Faso: Junta lifts radio station&#8217;s suspension over Niger coup criticism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Burkina Faso\u2019s junta-led government said one of the country\u2019s most popular radio stations could resume broadcasting on Monday (Sep. 11) after being suspended for airing an interview deemed \u201cinsulting\u201d to Niger\u2019s new military leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Radio Omega was ordered off the air on August 10 but has had the suspension lifted, Communications Minister and government spokesperson Rimtalba Jean-Emmanuel Ouedraogo announced in a statement on Sunday (Sep. 10).<\/p>\n<p>The government \u201cvery carefully examined\u201d the request made by the Burkinabe media monitoring centre known as OBM folloing a request by Radio Omega, he said.<\/p>\n<p>It had listened to the \u201cargument that \u2018the radio team has learned the lessons of this sanction\u2019,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The government remains committed to freedom of opinion and of the press, as well as to the \u201cresponsible\u201d carrying out of the journalistic profession, the minister said in Sunday\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting nonetheless to media organisations \u201cthe requirement of a media discourse that doesn\u2019t compromise the chances of our collective victory against the forces of evil and domination of the peoples of the Sahel\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Radio Omega ran on Aug. 10, an interview with Ousmane Abdoul Moumouni, the spokesman of a newly established Nigerien group campaigning to return President Mohamed Bazoum to power.<\/p>\n<p>Niger\u2019s elected leader was overthrown on July 26 by members of the Presidential Guard.<\/p>\n<p>Moumouni made \u201cinsulting comments with regard to the new Nigerien authorities\u201d, minister Ouedraogo said at the time of the channel\u2019s suspension.<\/p>\n<p>At the time he said\u00a0 the suspension was \u201cin the higher interests of the Nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Radio Omega is part of the Omega Media Group, owned by journalist and former foreign minister Alpha Barry.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?s=Burkina+Faso\">Burkina Faso<\/a> underwent two military <a href=\"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?s=Burkina+Faso+coup\">coups<\/a> last year, each triggered in part\u2014as in Mali and Niger\u2014by discontent at failures to stem a raging jihadist insurgency.<\/p>\n<p>It swiftly declared solidarity with Niger\u2019s new leaders and joined Mali in warning that any military intervention to restore Bazoum would be considered a \u201cdeclaration of war\u201d against them.<\/p>\n<p>In recent months, the Burkinabe authorities have suspended the French TV outlets LCI and France24, as well as Radio France Internationale (RFI) and expelled the correspondents of the French newspapers Liberation and Le Monde.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Burkina Faso\u2019s junta-led government said one of the country\u2019s most popular radio stations could resume broadcasting on Monday (Sep. 11) after being suspended for airing an interview deemed \u201cinsulting\u201d to Niger\u2019s new military leaders.
