{"id":9000,"date":"2023-09-04T15:27:07","date_gmt":"2023-09-04T15:27:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=9000"},"modified":"2023-09-04T15:27:07","modified_gmt":"2023-09-04T15:27:07","slug":"zimbabwes-president-mnangagwa-sworn-in-after-a-contested-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/9000\/zimbabwes-president-mnangagwa-sworn-in-after-a-contested-election\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe&#8217;s President Mnangagwa sworn in after a contested election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-0\">Zimbabwe&#8217;s President Emmerson Mnangagwa was on Monday sworn in for a second term after being declared the winner of last month&#8217;s disputed election, as he promised to lift millions out of poverty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-1\">Zimbabweans went to polls on Aug. 23 to elect a new president, parliamentarians and local council members, but the main opposition party described the\u00a0results\u00a0as a &#8220;gigantic fraud&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-2\">In his speech after being sworn in, Mnangagwa pleaded for unity in the aftermath of the polls, promising to revive the ailing economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-3\">&#8220;Responsive policies which begun in the first term of my presidency are on course to lift many out of poverty,&#8221; Mnangagwa said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-4\">Thousands of Mnangagwa&#8217;s supporters, mostly bussed in from across the country, sang and danced as the 80-year-old walked into the National Sports Stadium alongside his wife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-5\">He took oath of office in front of\u00a0Chief Justice Luke Malaba\u00a0who in 2018 declared Mnangagwa as winner following a constitutional court challenge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-6\">&#8220;I stand as a president of all. I offer you individually and collectively, unity,&#8221; Mnangagwa said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-7\">Several African leaders, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Mozambique leader Phillipe Nyusi and Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi attended the swearing-in ceremony, while Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema chose to stay away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-8\">Mnangagwa&#8217;s second term comes amid unrelenting economic challenges, with the Zimdollar having plunged 80% since the start of the year while international funding remains frozen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-9\"><a href=\"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/8922\/nelson-chamisa-zimbabwes-young-pastor-aiming-for-poll-upset\/\">Nelson Chamisa<\/a>, the 45-year-old leader of the opposition Citizens&#8217; Coalition for Change (CCC) party, called for <a href=\"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/8974\/zimbabwe-opposition-candidate-nelson-chamisa-calls-for-fresh-vote\/\">a new vote<\/a> after his party\u00a0alleged\u00a0the election was &#8220;flawed&#8221; but did not challenge the result in court, clearing the way for Mnangagwa&#8217;s inauguration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-10\">Mnangagwa had encouraged the opposition to approach the courts but said the vote was valid and\u00a0warned\u00a0there would be a crackdown on anyone spreading chaos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-11\">In its preliminary report, an observer mission by the southern African regional bloc SADC said the election fell short of regional standards and international standards while the European Union&#8217;s (EU) observer mission said the polls happened under a &#8220;climate of fear&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-12\">The government was also criticised for the arrest of over 40 civic society organisation activists and alleged widespread voter intimidation in the countryside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-13\">Although voting went on peacefully, polling was marred by massive delays in the deployment of ballot papers, leading to opposition accusations of voter suppression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-14\">After being side-lined from the international community for over two decades, Zimbabwe has under Mnangagwa sought to re-engage erstwhile western partners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-15\">In the absence of foreign funding, Zimbabwe&#8217;s economic challenges are expected to continue as millions face an uncertain future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-16\">Mnangagwa hinted that he will maintain the country&#8217;s currency, the Zimdollar, despite its weakening against the U.S. dollar since its reintroduction in 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-17\">&#8220;A national currency is indispensable. We can only grow our economy based on internal resources.
