{"id":8913,"date":"2023-08-22T15:13:23","date_gmt":"2023-08-22T15:13:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=8913"},"modified":"2023-08-22T15:13:23","modified_gmt":"2023-08-22T15:13:23","slug":"ecowas-envoy-to-niger-says-meeting-with-junta-was-fruitful","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/8913\/ecowas-envoy-to-niger-says-meeting-with-junta-was-fruitful\/","title":{"rendered":"ECOWAS envoy to Niger says meeting with junta was &#8216;fruitful&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria&#8217;s former military president, Abdulsalami Abubakar, who led a mission from West African regional bloc ECOWAS to Niger to negotiate with its <a href=\"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/8785\/who-is-the-new-military-ruler-of-niger-general-tchiani\/\">coup leaders<\/a> over the weekend, said on Tuesday that the visit was &#8220;very fruitful&#8221; and that he had hope the crisis could be solved through diplomacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-0\">Meanwhile, ECOWAS rejected a proposal by Niger&#8217;s military junta to hold elections within three years, extending a political impasse that could trigger a <a href=\"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/8873\/ecowas-says-we-are-going-into-niger-if-all-else-fails\/\">military intervention<\/a> if no agreement is reached following a July coup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-1\">ECOWAS and other international powers have been seeking diplomatic solutions to the July 26 putsch in Niger, the seventh in West and Central Africa in three years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-2\">But after several attempts for dialogue were rejected, the bloc &#8211; which has taken a harder stance on Niger than its junta-led neighbours &#8211; activated a regional force that military heads have said is ready to deploy if talks fail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-3\">It\u00a0doubled down\u00a0on its threat on Friday, one day before the junta eventually agreed to\u00a0meet\u00a0an ECOWAS delegation in the capital Niamey, suggesting new willingness to cooperate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-4\">In a televised address to the nation on Saturday evening, junta leader General Abdourahamane Tiani said coup leaders remained open to dialogue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-5\">But he also said the junta would consult on a transition back to democracy within three years, echoing lengthy timelines proposed by other coup leaders in the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-6\">ECOWAS Commissioner Abdel-Fatau Musah told Reuters on Monday that the bloc&#8217;s position remained clear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-7\">&#8220;Release Bazoum without preconditions, restore constitutional order without further delay,&#8221; he said, referring to Niger&#8217;s ousted president, Mohamed Bazoum. He spoke via WhatsApp in response to a query about the proposed elections delay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-8\">The outcome of &#8220;ongoing informal discussions&#8221; would determine whether ECOWAS would send another mediation mission to Niger, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-9\">The bloc&#8217;s reputation has been at stake since the recent string of coups eroded democracy in the region, raising doubts over its sway as junta leaders have clung to power.
