C\u00f4te d’Ivoire’s former president Henri Konan B\u00e9di\u00e9 has died aged 89 in hospital in Abidjan, a member of his party’s communications team told AFP late on Tuesday, August 1.<\/p>\n

Bedie succeeded C\u00f4te d’Ivoire<\/a>‘s post-colonial founding father, F\u00e9lix Houphou\u00ebt-Boigny, serving as president from 1993 to 1999 \u2013 when he was overthrown by the military in the country’s first-ever coup.<\/p>\n

A career politician, B\u00e9di\u00e9 “died at the Polyclinique Internationale Sainte Anne-Marie,” the party source said.<\/p>\n

A crowd had begun to gather outside his residence in Abidjan, an AFP journalist said.<\/p>\n

The veteran politician had not ruled out running in the country’s next presidential election.<\/p>\n

While in power, B\u00e9di\u00e9 enforced a nationalist policy that discriminated against immigrants in favour of people with two Ivorian parents, affecting countless workers on the country’s cocoa plantations.<\/p>\n
