{"id":8785,"date":"2023-07-31T09:18:54","date_gmt":"2023-07-31T09:18:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=8785"},"modified":"2026-02-01T14:09:36","modified_gmt":"2026-02-01T14:09:36","slug":"who-is-the-new-military-ruler-of-niger-general-tchiani","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/8785\/who-is-the-new-military-ruler-of-niger-general-tchiani\/","title":{"rendered":"Who is the new military ruler of Niger, General Tchiani?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 62-year-old general, Abdourahamane Tchiani is from <a href=\"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?s=niger\">Niger<\/a>\u2019s western region of Tillaberi, close to the border with Mali.<\/p>\n<p>He studied at a military academy in Thi\u00e8s in Senegal and carried out\u00a0 a number of training missions abroad before occupying posts in Niger including commander of the national gendarmerie.<\/p>\n<p>He has served in missions with the United Nations and West African regional bloc Ecowas in Cote d&#8217;Ivoire\u00a0as well as in Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>He was decorated in 1989 for securing the site of a crash near Bilma in northern Niger after a French flight crashed due to a suitcase bomb explosion. All 170 people on board died. Tchiani was the first officer on site.<\/p>\n<p>A former military attach\u00e9 at Niger\u2019s embassy in Germany, he also served as head of a battalion in Agadez, once seen as the world\u2019s smuggling capital, and often led military operations in the Niger desert against contraband and drug traffickers.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, Bazoum\u2019s predecessor, president\u00a0Mahamadou Issoufou, appointed him to lead the presidential guards \u2013 a special unit of around 2,000 soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>Then in 2018, Tchiani was promoted to the rank of general.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2021, he reportedly led the unit that blocked\u00a0another attempted coup, when a military unit tried to seize the presidential palace a few days before Bazoum was due to be sworn in.<\/p>\n<p>When Bazoum took office 2021, he kept the general as head of the presidential guards.<\/p>\n<p>A few months ago, he was decorated by president Bazoum \u201cfor fully taking on all his responsibilities with a spirit of devotion, self-sacrifice, availability and loyalty,\u201d reports RFI correspondent Serge Daniel.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>&#8216;Too close&#8217; to Issoufou<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Tchiani remains a close ally of Issoufou. He was linked to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-niger-politics-idUSKBN0U02YR20151217\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2015 coup attempt\u00a0<\/a>against the ex-president, but denied that in court.<\/p>\n<p>According to Serge Daniel, Tchiani was not chosen unanimously to lead the <a href=\"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/8760\/niger-coup-ecowas-threatens-force-on-junta-french-embassy-attacked\/\">National Council for the Safeguarding of the Country (CNSP)<\/a> as the new military government is calling itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome in the army some think he is too close to ex-president Mahamadou Issoufou,\u201d said a witness to the first 48 hours of discussion following Bazoum&#8217;s removal on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on state television on Friday, 28 July, Tchiani\u00a0called on &#8220;the technical and financial partners and friends of Niger to understand the specific situation of our country and provide all necessary support to help it overcome the challenges it faces&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Reiterating that soldiers had seized power because of worsening security as the country battles a terrorists\u00a0in the Sahel region, Tchiani said: &#8220;We cannot continue with the same approaches proposed so far, as it risks witnessing the gradual and inevitable disappearance of our nation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Critics of Tchiani underline that if the country&#8217;s security situation has indeed worsened, it has happened under his watch.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 62-year-old general, Abdourahamane Tchiani is from Niger\u2019s western region of Tillaberi, close to the border with Mali.
