{"id":8667,"date":"2023-07-12T14:48:54","date_gmt":"2023-07-12T14:48:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=8667"},"modified":"2023-07-12T14:48:54","modified_gmt":"2023-07-12T14:48:54","slug":"angola-and-drc-announce-joint-project-to-rehabilitate-railway-line","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/8667\/angola-and-drc-announce-joint-project-to-rehabilitate-railway-line\/","title":{"rendered":"Angola and DRC announce joint project to rehabilitate railway line"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?s=Angola\">Angola<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?s=Democratic+Republic+of+Congo\">Democratic Republic of Congo<\/a> (DRC)\u00a0have announced a joint project to rehabilitate the railway line linking the Congolese mining regions to the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week,\u00a0Luanda\u00a0and\u00a0Kinshasa\u00a0granted a group of investors a\u00a030-year concession to operate the line linking the Angolan port of Lobito to Kolwezi, in the heart of the DRC&#8217;s mineral-producing region.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a01,700\u00a0km railway line was built\u00a0100\u00a0years ago by British investors.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0$555\u00a0million project, partly finance by the\u00a0US, is expected to develop exports of copper ore and other products, boost regional trade and strengthen\u00a0Angola&#8217;s\u00a0ties with Western countries.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0DRC\u00a0is the world&#8217;s leading producer of cobalt and\u00a0Africa&#8217;s\u00a0leading producer of copper, two minerals used in the manufacture of solar panels and electric cars.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Angolan operator,\u00a0Vecturis, work should start within the next\u00a0three\u00a0months.<\/p>\n<p>The consortium, which includes commodities trader\u00a0Trafigura\u00a0and Portuguese construction company\u00a0Mota-Engil, hopes to reduce the journey time between the\u00a0DRC\u00a0and\u00a0Lobito\u00a0to less than\u00a036\u00a0hours, with at least six trains a day over the next five years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Angola\u00a0and the\u00a0Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)\u00a0have announced a joint project to rehabilitate the railway line linking the Congolese mining regions to the Atlantic Ocean.
