{"id":8664,"date":"2023-07-12T14:40:49","date_gmt":"2023-07-12T14:40:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=8664"},"modified":"2023-07-12T14:40:49","modified_gmt":"2023-07-12T14:40:49","slug":"kenya-and-iran-strengthen-bilateral-ties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/8664\/kenya-and-iran-strengthen-bilateral-ties\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya and Iran strengthen bilateral ties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kenya&#8217;s president William Ruto and Iran&#8217;s president Ebrahim Raisi have signed a number of trade agreements during a visit by Iran to the East African country on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The two leaders pledged to strengthen bilateral ties, with Raisi describing his visit to Kenya as\u00a0&#8220;a turning point in the development of relations between (the) two countries&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The five memoranda of understanding signed on Wednesday focus on &#8220;cooperation in information, communication, and technology, fisheries, animal health, and livestock products, and investment promotion,&#8221; Ruto told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Iran also plans to to set up a &#8220;motor vehicle assembly plant&#8221; in Mombasa county, according to Ruto.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>&#8220;Common political views&#8221;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The visit is the start of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.africanews.com\/2023\/07\/11\/irans-president-3-nation-trip-to-africa-what-stakes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a three-day tour of Africa by Raisi<\/a>. From Kenya, he will head to Uganda later on Wednesday before finishing his trip in Zimbabwe on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the trip, Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanani expressed optimism that the three-day trip to Africa could help bolster economic and trade ties with African countries.<\/p>\n<p>Iran is currently seeking to shore up diplomatic support in an effort to ease its international isolation.<\/p>\n<p>Kanani said on Monday that Tehran and the African continent share &#8220;common political views&#8221;, without elaborating further.<\/p>\n<p>The trip is the first by an Iranian leader to the continent in 11 years.
