{"id":8661,"date":"2023-07-12T14:34:38","date_gmt":"2023-07-12T14:34:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=8661"},"modified":"2023-07-12T14:34:38","modified_gmt":"2023-07-12T14:34:38","slug":"uganda-imposes-levy-on-foreign-digital-companies-income","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/8661\/uganda-imposes-levy-on-foreign-digital-companies-income\/","title":{"rendered":"Uganda imposes levy on foreign digital companies&#8217; income"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?s=uganda\">Uganda<\/a>&#8216;s parliament late on Tuesday passed a new tax law that imposes a 5% levy on income earned in the country by foreign providers of digital communications services such as Twitter and Meta&#8217;s Facebook.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-1\">Authorities in the east African country have been exploring ways of tapping into the fast-expanding digital economy to help boost revenue needed to pay off mounting public debt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-2\">The Ugandan parliament said in a Twitter post that lawmakers had passed a new tax law called &#8220;The Income Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2023&#8221; containing the new levy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-3\">The new law &#8220;will also tax non-resident providers of digital services in Uganda such as Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, Netflix,&#8221; the parliament said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-4\">The bill has prompted alarm in some quarters, with critics, including opposition lawmakers and rights advocates, warning it could see social media firms seek ways to charge Ugandans for services that are currently free.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-5\">They have argued the levy is a means to limit access to social media and stifle free speech for a government hostile to such platforms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-6\">President Yoweri Museveni, in power since 1986, has criticised social media in the past saying it was mostly used for rumour-mongering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-7\">However parliament said it &#8220;was not a social media tax and would not affect an ordinary Ugandan in any way&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Uganda&#8216;s parliament late on Tuesday passed a new tax law that imposes a 5% levy on income earned in the country by foreign providers of digital communications services such as Twitter and Meta&#8217;s Facebook.
