{"id":2825,"date":"2022-04-24T10:33:25","date_gmt":"2022-04-24T10:33:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=2825"},"modified":"2022-04-24T10:33:25","modified_gmt":"2022-04-24T10:33:25","slug":"former-guinea-president-alpha-conde-released-from-house-arrest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/2825\/former-guinea-president-alpha-conde-released-from-house-arrest\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Guinea president Alpha Conde released from house arrest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Guinea\u2019s\u00a0deposed president\u00a0Alpha Conde has been released from house arrest and can receive visitors, including family members, the ruling military government announced.<\/p>\n<p>A statement by the military released late on Friday said that coup leader and interim president Colonel <a href=\"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/2022\/01\/24\/head-of-guineas-ruling-junta-appoints-members-of-transitional-council\/\">Mamady Doumbouya<\/a> \u201cinforms national and international opinion that the former president of the republic is finally free\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile continuing to benefit from adequate protection, he can receive on demand members of his biological and political family, friends and close ones,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>The former president will continue to live at his wife\u2019s family home in a suburb of the capital, Conakry, until renovations on his own home are completed, the statement added.<\/p>\n<p data-inc=\"1\">The 84-year-old was removed by army officers last year and replaced by Doumbouya. He was <a href=\"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/2022\/04\/10\/guineas-ousted-ex-president-conde-returns-from-medical-trip\/\">allowed to go to the United Arab Emirates<\/a> for medical treatment in January, returning to Guinea on April 10.<\/p>\n<p>Conde\u2019s party, Rally of the Guinean People (RPG), has said he was\u00a0not truly free before\u00a0or after his trip, and demanded his \u201ctotal and unconditional freedom\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The RPG suspended its participation at a military-organised national reconciliation conference to further protest against his detention.<\/p>\n<p>Conde became Guinea\u2019s first democratically elected president in 2010, with his triumph seen as putting an end to authoritarian rule by the country\u2019s two first presidents,\u00a0who were in power\u00a0for 50 years combined.<\/p>\n<p data-inc=\"2\">In 2020, Conde pushed through a new constitution that allowed him to run for a third term in October 2020.<\/p>\n<p data-inc=\"2\">The move sparked mass demonstrations in which dozens of protesters were killed. While Conde won the October election, his political opponents denounced the polls as a sham.<\/p>\n<p>Conde\u2019s removal from power was widely condemned by Guinea\u2019s allies, and led to its suspension from the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a015-nation bloc sanctioned\u00a0Guinea\u2019s coup leaders and has set an April 25 deadline for them to present a timeline for a return to constitutional rule.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Guinea\u2019s\u00a0deposed president\u00a0Alpha Conde has been released from house arrest and can receive visitors, including family members, the ruling military government announced.
