{"id":2517,"date":"2022-03-21T13:54:33","date_gmt":"2022-03-21T13:54:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=2517"},"modified":"2022-03-21T13:54:33","modified_gmt":"2022-03-21T13:54:33","slug":"zambia-provisional-liquidator-konkola-copper-mines-resigns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/2517\/zambia-provisional-liquidator-konkola-copper-mines-resigns\/","title":{"rendered":"Zambia: Provisional liquidator Konkola Copper Mines resigns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__base__22dCE body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__OOj6H\" data-testid=\"paragraph-0\">The provisional liquidator of <a href=\"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?s=Zambia\">Zambia<\/a>&#8216;s Konkola Copper Mines (KCM), a company over which Vedanta Resources and the government have been locked in a long dispute, has resigned, he confirmed to Reuters on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__base__22dCE body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__OOj6H\" data-testid=\"paragraph-1\">Zambia&#8217;s previous government, which owns 20% of KCM through state mining investment firm ZCCM-IH, handed control of KCM to liquidator Milingo Lungu in 2019, triggering the dispute with Vedanta, which owns the other 80%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__base__22dCE body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__OOj6H\" data-testid=\"paragraph-2\">It was not immediately clear what Lungu&#8217;s resignation would mean for KCM&#8217;s future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__base__22dCE body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__OOj6H\" data-testid=\"paragraph-3\">Vedanta has said it is keen to resolve the dispute over KCM and has pledged to invest $1.5 billion into its operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__base__22dCE body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__OOj6H\" data-testid=\"paragraph-4\">In a letter seen by Reuters dated March 17 and addressed to KCM official receiver Natasha Kalimukwa, Lungu said he had resigned, but he did not give any reason for his decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__base__22dCE body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__OOj6H\" data-testid=\"paragraph-5\">&#8220;This serves to inform you that I have with immediate effect resigned as provisional liquidator of Konkola Copper Mines,&#8221; read the letter, whose authenticity Lungu confirmed to Reuters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__base__22dCE body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__OOj6H\" data-testid=\"paragraph-6\">Kalimukwa had moved on March 11 to suspend Lungu after receiving a complaint from ZCCM-IH relating to mismanagement.
