A constitutional amendment to create state police forces in \u200bNigeria won approval from 28 \u200cstate legislatures, surpassing the threshold needed for constitutional change and moving the plan \u200bcloser to becoming law, the National \u200bAssembly said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The reform would \u2060mark one of the most \u200bconsequential changes to Nigeria’s security framework \u200bin recent years, allowing the creation of state-controlled police forces in a country where policing \u200bis currently overseen by a \u200bsingle federal force.<\/p>\n
The figure exceeds the constitutional minimum \u200cof \u206024 states, equivalent to two-thirds of Nigeria’s 36 states.<\/p>\n
National Assembly clerk Kamoru Ogunlana said it had verified the \u200bauthenticity of \u200bthe \u2060approvals and supporting legislative records.<\/p>\n
The legislation will now be \u200bprepared for transmission to President \u200bBola \u2060Tinubu for assent.<\/p>\n
