Ethiopia has ordered six Sudanese diplomats to leave the country, a senior Ethiopian official said on Wednesday, marking a further deterioration in relations between \u200bthe two sides over allegations each is supporting the other’s enemies.<\/p>\n
Sudan \u200caccuses Ethiopia of supporting the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, while Ethiopia accuses Sudan of backing rebels in its northern Tigray region.<\/p>\n
The allegations and counter-allegations, which both sides deny, \u200bhave raised fears that the two wars could bleed into each other, \u200bspawning a broader conflict in the Horn of Africa.<\/p>\n
On Sunday, \u2060Sudan\u2019s government said it had lodged a complaint against Ethiopia with the \u200bUnited Nations Security Council and the African Union\u2019s Peace and Security Council, accusing \u200bEthiopia of allowing the RSF to use its territory to launch suicide drones against civilian infrastructure in Sudan.<\/p>\n
The spokesperson for the Ethiopian prime minister\u2019s office did not immediately respond \u200bto a Reuters request for comment.<\/p>\n
Ethiopia ordered six staff members of the \u200bSudanese consulate in the border town of Assosa to leave within 48 hours, the \u200csenior Ethiopian \u2060official said, without providing a reason for the decision.<\/p>\n
The official asked not to be named to discuss a sensitive diplomatic matter.<\/p>\n
Addis Ababa denies it supports the RSF in Sudan’s civil war. The conflict has displaced more than \u200b14 million people, \u200baccording to UN \u2060figures, and created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises since it erupted in April 2023.<\/p>\n
Ethiopia has accused Sudan, \u200bEgypt and Eritrea of supporting Tigrayan rebels who launched an \u200boffensive \u2060against government forces in September. All three countries have denied this.<\/p>\n
“The Sudanese government remains committed to its right to defend its territory. Nevertheless, it is making \u2060every possible \u200beffort to avoid an open war with \u200bEthiopia,” Amjad Farid, political and foreign affairs adviser for Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council, said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
