Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said on Wednesday that his \u200bcountry had received a first batch of Russian \u200cSu-35 fighter jets and that it would later get S-400 air defence systems from Moscow as part of a drive to bolster its \u200bmilitary capabilities.<\/p>\n
Abiy said on X the military hardware was \u200bmilestone in the Horn of Africa country’s efforts to strengthen national security \u2060and “pre-emptively deter aggression”.<\/p>\n
He said Russian President Vladimir Putin had \u200bhelped ensure that the first batch of Su-35 war planes were delivered \u200ba year earlier than scheduled. Ethiopia would get 12 Su-35s and four S-400 batteries, he added.<\/p>\n
Abiy did not disclose the value of the agreement \u200bor where the aircraft and air defence batteries would be \u200bbased.<\/p>\n
Russian state-owned arms exporter Rosoboronexport told Reuters: “the first batch of two Su-35 \u200caircraft \u2060was delivered to the Ethiopian Air Force today,” without giving further details.<\/p>\n
Ethiopia faces multiple security challenges, including in the northern Tigray region, where a rebel alliance last month launched an \u200boffensive against the \u200bgovernment, rekindling \u2060a war that killed hundreds of thousands of people between 2020 and 2022.<\/p>\n
In the previous \u200bconflict, its air power \u2014 especially through the widespread \u200bdeployment \u2060of foreign-made drones \u2014 helped turn the tide of the fighting.<\/p>\n
The renewed fighting led to the severing of ties between Ethiopia and its \u2060neighbour \u200bEritrea, which Addis Ababa accuses of \u200bbacking the rebels, although Asmara denies that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
