At least 60 people were killed in two separate attacks in Ethiopia’s conflict-hit Oromiya region \u200bin the past week, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church \u200csaid.<\/p>\n
Church authorities said the dead were all Christians, but did not go into details on how they died or who \u200bwas behind the attacks.<\/p>\n
The Oromiya regional government and a \u200bsource linked to a rebel alliance fighting government forces in \u2060the northern Tigray region traded blame for the attacks.<\/p>\n
The \u200bHoly Synod of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church said \u200b14 believers were killed in Merti Woreda on October 20 and 46 in Sherka Woreda on October 24.<\/p>\n
More than 20 homes \u200bwere also burned and more than 20 people \u200bhospitalised with severe injuries, the church’s statement, issued on Monday, added.<\/p>\n
The regional \u200cgovernment \u2060said the rebel alliance launched the attacks to try to spark religious conflict, without providing evidence.<\/p>\n
The source linked to the rebel alliance said the Oromiya regional government \u200bhad carried out \u200bthe killings, citing \u2060conversations with two local residents.<\/p>\n
The Oromo Liberation Army rebel group, which the regional \u200bgovernment has blamed for previous attacks on \u200bOrthodox Christians, \u2060did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n
