South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Friday he was \u200breinstating the country’s police chief, six \u200cmonths after he was suspended over charges he broke public finance rules in the \u200birregular awarding of a tender.<\/p>\n
Fannie Masemola, \u200bnational commissioner of the South African \u2060Police Service since 2022, will \u200bresume his duties on Monday after prosecutors \u200bwithdrew charges linked to a 228 million-rand ($13.85 million) police health services contract.<\/p>\n
The presidency said prosecutors \u200bordered the withdrawal of charges \u200bagainst Masemola last month, with a local court \u200cin \u2060Pretoria formally withdrawing the case shortly thereafter.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors had accused Masemola of failing to comply with financial oversight and procurement \u200bcontrols linked \u200bto \u2060a police health services contract awarded to Medicare24, allegations he \u200bdenied.<\/p>\n
