Suspected Boko Haram fighters killed at least 10 soldiers and wounded at \u200bleast 20 others in a coordinated assault on an \u200carmy base in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno state this week, military sources and residents said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The militants attacked the base in the Guzamala \u200blocal government area on Tuesday night, overrunning troops, destroying \u200bmilitary vehicles and setting fire to parts of nearby \u2060Mairari village, two military sources said.<\/p>\n
More than 20 people were \u200bwounded in the assault, while at least five civilians and a \u200bforest guard were killed, the sources said on condition of anonymity because they are not authorised to speak to the media.<\/p>\n
Military spokesperson Captain Mohammed \u200bGoni did not respond to calls or messages seeking comment \u200bon the attack.<\/p>\n
Before the attack on the military base, the fighters seized \u200cmore \u2060than 40 fishing boats in Tumbun Barebari, a nearby lakeside village, said Jibrin Hassan, a fisherman who lost his boat in the raid.<\/p>\n
Babagana Muhammad, another fisherman, said “it was a simultaneous attack… \u200bjust that the \u200bdifference is we \u2060the fishermen were not harmed”.<\/p>\n
Attacks by terrorist groups, including Boko Haram and Islamic State West \u200bAfrica Province (ISWAP), have intensified in recent weeks despite \u200byears of \u2060military operations aimed at containing the 17-year insurgency in northeastern Nigeria.<\/p>\n
