Guinea-Bissau’s transitional government said Tuesday it has not approved a proposed clinical trial of a hepatitis B vaccine in newborns, \u200bdenying reports that the study had been authorized.<\/p>\n
The denial followed \u200cnews reports that the Trump administration-funded study to assess the effects of administering the hepatitis B vaccine at birth would go ahead in the West African \u200bcountry.<\/p>\n
The proposed trial triggered outcry earlier this year, with some \u200bscientists arguing the study was unethical because some of \u2060the newborns involved would not get the vaccine, which is known \u200bto be safe and save lives, in a country with high rates \u200bof hepatitis B. The illness commonly transmits from mother to child during birth and can cause liver failure and cancer.<\/p>\n
The country’s health minister, Quinhin Nantote, said \u200bthe government had not yet authorized the trial during a press \u200bconference in the capital on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
“Any scientific research initiative involving human beings, particularly children, \u200cmust \u2060strictly comply with applicable national legislation, international ethical principles, competent evaluation and approval mechanisms,” Nantote said, without providing details on the process.<\/p>\n
In January, the director general of the Africa CDC, Dr. Jean Kaseya, told \u200bjournalists that Guinea-Bissau \u200bofficials had asked \u2060for support with a further ethical and technical review of the trial.<\/p>\n
The US Department of Health and \u200bHuman Services also denied the trial has been authorized. “The \u200bstudy has \u2060not been approved,” the department said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The proposed trial aimed to investigate potential “non-specific effects” of vaccines, including skin disorders and neurodevelopmental \u2060disorders, such \u200bas autism, according to details of the \u200bstudy posted online.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
