{"id":2228,"date":"2022-02-24T14:38:20","date_gmt":"2022-02-24T14:38:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=2228"},"modified":"2022-02-24T14:38:20","modified_gmt":"2022-02-24T14:38:20","slug":"kenyas-president-endorses-opposition-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/2228\/kenyas-president-endorses-opposition-leader\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya&#8217;s president endorses opposition leader"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-reactid=\".1pk2i138xfg.1.0.1.1.1.1:$post-62171d5c571bfc64f8e6511c.0.6.0.0:$post_1\">Kenya\u2019s President Uhuru Kenyatta has officially endorsed opposition leader Raila Odinga to succeed him in the <a href=\"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/2022\/02\/06\/kenya-gradually-turning-away-from-unpeaceful-electoral-precedents\/\">presidential elections<\/a> set for 9 August.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\".1pk2i138xfg.1.0.1.1.1.1:$post-62171d5c571bfc64f8e6511c.0.6.0.0:$post_2\">President Kenyatta urged his supporters to back Mr Odinga&#8217;s bid saying that he had the best interests of the country at heart.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\".1pk2i138xfg.1.0.1.1.1.1:$post-62171d5c571bfc64f8e6511c.0.6.0.0:$post_3\">He said Mr Odinga understood where the country was heading, and that he would therefore be at peace to hand him the &#8220;leadership mantle&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\".1pk2i138xfg.1.0.1.1.1.1:$post-62171d5c571bfc64f8e6511c.0.6.0.0:$post_4\">This will be the fifth time Mr Odinga is running for president, and many believe it will be his last.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\".1pk2i138xfg.1.0.1.1.1.1:$post-62171d5c571bfc64f8e6511c.0.6.0.0:$post_5\">He will vie under the Azimio la Umoja (Swahili for &#8220;pledge of unity&#8221;) alliance, which is made up of 10 parties, including his Orange Democratic Movement and Mr Kenyatta\u2019s Jubilee.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\".1pk2i138xfg.1.0.1.1.1.1:$post-62171d5c571bfc64f8e6511c.0.6.0.0:$post_6\">The president&#8217;s backing of Mr Odinga has led to the political isolation of Deputy President William Ruto, who will also be seeking the presidency under the United Democratic Alliance.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\".1pk2i138xfg.1.0.1.1.1.1:$post-62171d5c571bfc64f8e6511c.0.6.0.0:$post_7\">The president and his deputy have been estranged since the president reconciled with Mr Odinga in the aftermath of the 2017 election.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kenya\u2019s President Uhuru Kenyatta has officially endorsed opposition leader Raila Odinga to succeed him in the presidential elections set for 9 August.
