Zambia is negotiating a critical minerals deal with the US government \u200bafter “decoupling” it from a separate health \u200cfunding agreement it signed on Thursday, its foreign minister said.<\/p>\n
“There was this (Memorandum of Understanding) \u200bon health and another on critical \u200bminerals, and we were saying that \u2060these need to be decoupled, and \u200bthis has been done,” Mulambo Haimbe said \u200bat a signing ceremony for the health pact, which will see the US provide $1.5 billion in \u200bfunding.<\/p>\n
Asked for more details about the \u200bminerals deal, the minister said it was “still being negotiated” \u200cbut \u2060declined to elaborate.<\/p>\n
Zambia had resisted an agreement with the United States that would directly link funding for its health \u200bsector with \u200ballowing greater \u2060US access to minerals.<\/p>\n
The minister did not specify which minerals \u200bZambia is considering granting the \u200bUS \u2060access to.<\/p>\n
