{"id":22200,"date":"2026-10-05T14:46:44","date_gmt":"2026-10-05T14:46:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=22200"},"modified":"2026-10-05T14:46:44","modified_gmt":"2026-10-05T14:46:44","slug":"airstrikes-and-artillery-hit-north-ethiopia-after-tigray-capitals-fall-aid-sources-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/22200\/airstrikes-and-artillery-hit-north-ethiopia-after-tigray-capitals-fall-aid-sources-say\/","title":{"rendered":"Airstrikes and artillery hit north Ethiopia after Tigray capital&#8217;s fall, aid sources say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Airstrikes and artillery fire hit northern Ethiopia&#8217;s Tigray region overnight into \u200bMonday morning, aid sources said, almost two weeks into clashes between federal government and rebel forces that \u200chave raised fears of wider fighting.<\/p>\n<p>Air attacks killed at least 17 people northwest of Tigray&#8217;s capital Mekelle &#8211; which federal Ethiopian National Defence Force soldiers took over the weekend &#8211; according to a bulletin circulated among humanitarian groups.<\/p>\n<p>The bulletin added that government forces exchanged artillery fire \u200bwith fighters loyal to the Tigray People&#8217;s Liberation Front &#8211; the region&#8217;s dominant political force which is part of \u200ba rebel alliance aiming to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed&#8217;s government.<\/p>\n<p>Spokespeople for Abiy&#8217;s office, the \u2060federal forces and the TPLF did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the reports, which Reuters could \u200bnot confirm independently.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts say the fighting threatens to escalate into a wider conflict, with Ethiopia accusing Eritrea, Sudan and Egypt of \u200bsupporting the armed opposition. All three countries have denied this.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Ethiopia and Eritrea, which fought a border war from 1998-2000, severed diplomatic ties over the allegations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WORST ESCALATION SINCE 2020-2022 CIVIL WAR<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fighting since September 23 is the worst escalation of violence since a 2020-2022 civil \u200bwar in Tigray that resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths.<\/p>\n<p>In that war, federal forces captured Mekelle within a \u200bmonth before the TPLF reclaimed it seven months later.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday morning, Ethiopia&#8217;s military and Tigrayan forces exchanged heavy artillery fire close to \u200cthe \u2060Tekeze River near the town of Mai Tsebri, according to the humanitarian bulletin.<\/p>\n<p>Overnight, airstrikes killed at least nine people in Adwa, which is about 100 km (60 miles) northwest of Mekelle, and eight in Sheraro in northwestern Tigray, the bulletin said.<\/p>\n<p>It did not say who launched the airstrikes.<\/p>\n<p>Another aid worker confirmed the strikes in Adwa, but did not have information \u200babout casualties.<\/p>\n<p>In Mekelle, which Tigrayan \u200bforces left without a fight, \u2060daily life was returning to normal, with shops reopening and phone and internet access returning a week-long disruption, residents said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>US WARNS ETHIOPIA AND ERITREA AGAINST CONFLICT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Analysts are closely watching \u200bthe Ethiopian military as it advances northward toward the Eritrean border.<\/p>\n<p>Eritrean forces fought in \u200bsupport of Ethiopia&#8217;s \u2060federal government in Tigray during the 2020-2022 war following a 2018 normalisation of ties between the longtime foes that won Abiy the Nobel Peace Prize.<\/p>\n<p>Relations soured afterward, in part over landlocked Ethiopia&#8217;s public insistence that sea access is vital for its \u2060security and \u200beconomy.<\/p>\n<p>Eritrea says it fears Ethiopia will try to take its Assab port \u200bby force.
