{"id":22188,"date":"2026-09-30T15:47:42","date_gmt":"2026-09-30T15:47:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=22188"},"modified":"2026-09-30T15:47:42","modified_gmt":"2026-09-30T15:47:42","slug":"burundi-to-take-third-country-deportees-from-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/22188\/burundi-to-take-third-country-deportees-from-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Burundi to take third-country deportees from US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Burundi has agreed to join a clutch of other African nations in receiving migrants from other \u200bcountries deported from the US under President Donald \u200cTrump&#8217;s hardline immigration policy.<\/p>\n<p>However, Bujumbura will only accept those not accused of crime or terrorism links, said Nancy Ninette Mutoni, spokesperson for \u200bPresident Evariste Ndayishimiye.<\/p>\n<p>Washington has sent \u2060so-called third-country deportees to some half a dozen African \u200bnations under opaque deals that Senate Democrats say have cost \u200btens of millions of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>In many cases, deportees had secured legal protections from immigration courts in the US against repatriation. But rights \u200bgroups say the third-country deals allow the US to \u200bcircumvent those protections.<\/p>\n<p>Mutoni said preparations were underway to arrange accommodation, living \u200cconditions \u2060and integration into local communities. &#8220;Receiving them requires serious planning \u2014 where they will stay, what they will eat and how they will live alongside the local population,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If they choose \u200bto join \u200bBurundian citizens and \u2060make a valuable contribution to national development, the law will be respected,&#8221; she said, regarding \u200bpotential citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>Burundi aimed to both strengthen \u200bdiplomatic relations \u2060and provide hospitality to people in need, the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n<p>The US State Department did not immediately respond to requests \u2060for \u200bcomment while a spokesperson for the \u200bBurundi foreign ministry said details of the agreement were not yet available.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Burundi has agreed to join a clutch of other African nations in receiving migrants from other \u200bcountries deported from the US under President Donald \u200cTrump&#8217;s hardline immigration policy.
