Nigeria and the United States have signed a framework agreement aimed at \u200bdeepening US investment in the West African \u200ccountry’s mining sector, Nigeria’s solid minerals minister Dele Alake said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The agreement, signed in New \u200bYork on Wednesday by Alake and \u200bUS Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, \u2060covers geological data, mineral exploration, mineral development \u200band processing, infrastructure, and technical capacity building.<\/p>\n
The deal \u200bfollows Washington’s push to strengthen ties with mineral-producing countries and diversify supply chains for critical minerals used \u200bin technologies such as electric vehicle batteries \u200band renewable energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Nigeria estimates its mineral resources are \u200cworth \u2060about $700 billion and is seeking to diversify the economy away from oil.<\/p>\n
“Nigeria cannot remain a source of raw materials while others capture \u200bmost of \u200bthe value. \u2060We want more local processing, quality jobs, stronger skills and greater \u200bopportunities for Nigerian businesses,” Alake said \u200bin \u2060a statement.<\/p>\n
