Judges at the International Criminal Court on Wednesday convicted a \u200bformer Seleka militia leader from the Central African Republic \u200bof crimes against humanity including torture.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors accused Mahamat Said Abdel \u2060Kani of running a prison where suspected supporters of \u200bthen-President Francois Bozize were beaten and tortured. He denied all charges.<\/p>\n
Presiding \u200bjudge Miatta Maria Samba said that Said and others oversaw beatings and torture of prisoners as part of a plan to target perceived Bozize \u200bsupporters in the capital Bangui.<\/p>\n
He was found guilty on four \u200bcounts of crimes against humanity including persecution and torture. The judges dismissed several \u200cwar \u2060crimes charges, finding that at the time the alleged crimes were committed the armed conflict had already ended.<\/p>\n
Said, dressed in jeans and a blue sweatshirt, gave no reaction as the verdict \u200bwas read out.<\/p>\n
A \u200bseparate hearing \u2060will determine his sentence.<\/p>\n
The predominantly Muslim rebels known as Seleka, or “alliance” in the Sango language, seized \u200bpower in 2013 as part of the Central \u200bAfrican Republic’s \u2060long-running civil war, ousting Bozize. Their rule gave rise to opposing “anti-Balaka” Christian-dominated militias.<\/p>\n
The ICC has been investigating the violence in the \u2060Central \u200bAfrican Republic since 2014. It has convicted \u200btwo “anti-Balaka” leaders, but Said is the first Seleka member to be convicted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
