Mozambique\u2019s finance ministry said on Friday it hoped an International Monetary Fund mission that ended this \u200bweek would pave the way for a new support programme, \u200cwhile the fund suggested more reforms may need to come first.<\/p>\n
The ministry said in a statement that there could be a follow-up mission, possibly in November, to \u200bdiscuss programme conditions and targets.<\/p>\n
The IMF said in an end-of-mission \u200bstatement that talks on “the reforms needed to pave the way \u2060for a Fund-supported program” would continue in the coming months.<\/p>\n
Mozambique\u2019s dollar \u200bbond maturing in September 2031 pared earlier gains after the IMF statement \u200band was bid at 94.29 cents, Tradeweb data showed.<\/p>\n
The September 9 to 18 mission, led by IMF mission chief Pablo Lopez-Murphy, met Prime Minister Maria Benvinda Levi, Finance \u200bMinister Carla Loveira and Central Bank Governor Felisberto Navalha.<\/p>\n
The resource-rich Southern \u200bAfrican nation’s previous IMF programme ended early in April 2025, with talks for a \u200cnew \u2060deal expected to hinge on economic reforms.<\/p>\n
The fund said economic activity “remains subdued but is showing signs of recovery”, with inflation contained and fiscal consolidation that began in 2025 continuing, anchored by spending restraint.<\/p>\n
One of Mozambique’s most \u200bpressing challenges remains \u200bits heavy debt \u2060burden, which a World Bank and International Monetary Fund analysis has deemed unsustainable.<\/p>\n
Its problems date back to a 2016 \u200bhidden-debt scandal, which wrecked investor confidence and curbed access \u200bto \u2060funding.<\/p>\n
Delays to major natural gas projects that had been expected to boost exports, revenue and government finances have made matters worse.<\/p>\n
