Ten lions were found dead in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro wildlife reserve this \u200bweek and preliminary findings suggest they may \u200chave been poisoned, the area’s management authority said.<\/p>\n
The deaths raise concerns over the conservation of lions in \u200bone of Africa’s most renowned wildlife ecosystems. \u200bPoisoning has been a recurring threat to \u2060large carnivores across parts of East Africa, \u200boften linked to conflicts between predators and livestock \u200bowners.<\/p>\n
The lions were discovered on September 18 in the Ndutu area of Endulen Ward in Arusha region, the Ngorongoro \u200bConservation Area Authority said in a statement \u200breleased late on Saturday.<\/p>\n
“Preliminary findings suggest the animals may \u200chave \u2060died after ingesting poison,” the authority said, adding that it had launched an investigation to determine the cause and identify those responsible.<\/p>\n
The Ngorongoro Conservation \u200bArea, a \u200bUNESCO World \u2060Heritage Site in northern Tanzania, is one of the country’s leading \u200btourism attractions. It is home to a \u200bwide \u2060range of wildlife, including lions, elephants, buffaloes and endangered black rhinos.<\/p>\n
