South African police said they found a ninth woman’s body near Johannesburg on Thursday as they investigated a series \u200bof killings in the same area over the last \u200ctwo months.<\/p>\n
Officers said the young woman appeared to be in the same age range as the other bodies, but stopped short of saying there was \u200ba definite link.<\/p>\n
President Cyril Ramaphosa has vowed “no stone will \u200bbe left unturned” in the investigation into the deaths, \u2060which have caused widespread alarm.<\/p>\n
The victims are mostly aged in their \u200b20s or 30s, and some have been found stripped of their \u200bclothes and showing signs of sexual violence.<\/p>\n
Violence against women is one of the country’s most entrenched social problems, despite years of government pledges to tackle \u200bit. The deaths have reignited anger over gender-based violence and \u200bpoor public safety.<\/p>\n
“I am feeling a lot of fear and paranoia, especially for \u200cus \u2060with daughters,” said Nomgqibelo Tshabalala, a resident of the Ekurhuleni area east of Johannesburg where the bodies had been found.<\/p>\n
“My daughter caught an Uber yesterday and I did not sleep worried and when \u200bI heard about \u200bthis incident \u2060on the radio this morning I got even more scared.”<\/p>\n
The woman’s body found on Thursday appeared to \u200bhave been dumped there and the crime could \u200bhave \u2060happened somewhere else, police said.<\/p>\n
“We were called here this morning after the discovery of yet another body of a young woman,” Deputy National \u2060Commissioner \u200bfor Policing Tebello Mosikili said.<\/p>\n
