Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Tuesday \u200bthe U.S. was announcing a new visa restriction policy targeting some foreign nationals \u200cfrom South Africa as President\u00a0Donald Trump’s\u00a0administration continues to cool ties with the country.<\/p>\n
The Trump administration has\u00a0criticized South Africa over a range of issues including actions aimed at addressing racial inequality that Trump claims hurt \u200bthe African nation’s white population.<\/p>\n
Washington has also criticized land reform policies and South \u200bAfrica’s\u00a0genocide case\u00a0against Israel at the International Court of Justice, over the\u00a0U.S. \u2060ally’s assault on Gaza.<\/p>\n
The visa curb policy targets “foreign nationals who are responsible for, or \u200bcomplicit in, the enactment or implementation of laws or policies that enable uncompensated land seizures, \u200brace-based discrimination, and\/or the incitement of imminent violence against members of minority ethnic or racial groups in South Africa,” Rubio said in a statement.<\/p>\n
“The South African government has not adequately addressed the previously laid \u200bout concerns,” Rubio said.<\/p>\n
The South African embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a \u200brequest for comment.<\/p>\n
Pretoria says there is no evidence of discrimination or persecution against white people and that \u200cideas \u2060of white racial superiority are a threat to South Africa’s post-apartheid unity, its sovereignty and its diplomatic relations. President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for global efforts to debunk false stories about white persecution.<\/p>\n
Trump has previously cut\u00a0aid to South Africa, offered refuge to white minority Afrikaners,\u00a0expelled\u00a0\u200bthe country’s ambassador and \u200bmade\u00a0false claims\u00a0of \u2060white genocide in the African nation.<\/p>\n
Trump’s portrayal of South Africa as dangerous and oppressive for white people also aligns with some of \u200bhis domestic policies that have targeted diversity initiatives aimed at addressing \u200bhistoric inequities for \u2060marginalized groups. Trump casts them as discriminatory against white people and men.<\/p>\n
Rubio’s statement on Tuesday did not identify any person by name.<\/p>\n
