Toronto-based Almonty Industries\u00a0said on Monday it had signed a deal with Rwanda to develop and process tungsten, giving \u200bthe country a 25% stake in the critical mineral \u200cproject.<\/p>\n
The partnership followed an introduction by the U.S. Department of State and aligned with the 2025 U.S.-Rwanda Framework for Shared Economic Prosperity, which supports investment \u200bin critical minerals, Almonty said.<\/p>\n
The U.S. has deepened partnerships with \u200bAfrican countries including\u00a0Democratic Republic of Congo\u00a0and Rwanda, while \u2060expanding investment ties with Guinea, Kenya and others as it \u200bseeks to\u00a0loosen China’s grip\u00a0on mineral supply chains.<\/p>\n
Western countries\u00a0are trying \u200bto build critical mineral supply chains outside China.<\/p>\n
Rwanda will get a 25% stake in Almonty Rwanda Pty Ltd in exchange for contributing the Shyorongi tungsten exploration \u200bconcession and a mineral processing licence, while Almonty will retain \u200b75%, the company said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Almonty said the venture would initially source \u200core, \u2060pre-concentrate and tailings from existing licence holders, including small-scale miners, for export or upgrading ahead of plans to build a processing plant.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Geological Survey says Rwanda is the only African country among \u200bthe world’s top \u200b10 tungsten producers. \u2060It is seeking to boost its mineral processing and value addition.<\/p>\n
Almonty said the project would combine \u200bmaterial sourced from existing producers, a mobile tailings-processing unit \u200band \u2060exploration of the 32-square-kilometre Shyorongi concession, before advancing to a centralised processing facility.<\/p>\n
The deal comes ahead of new\u00a0U.S. defence procurement\u00a0rules taking effect \u2060in \u200bJanuary 2027 that will require tungsten used \u200bin certain military supply chains to be traceable back to its source.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
