India’s Lohum said on Wednesday it had dispatched its first shipment of lithium \u200bore from Zimbabwe, marking the start of \u200cits mining operations in the southern African country and making it the first domestic company to produce lithium from \u200boverseas assets.<\/p>\n
The Indian \u200bproducer of sustainable critical minerals has secured \u2060rights to 10 lithium mining blocks in \u200bZimbabwe’s Matabeleland South Province covering about 1,100 hectares, \u200bwith estimated deposits of 30 million-40 million tonnes of ore<\/p>\n
The assets are expected to support production of around \u200b300,000 metric tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent \u200band carry an estimated value of about $7 billion at \u200ccurrent \u2060prices.<\/p>\n
The company also holds an option to acquire up to 90 adjacent mining blocks.<\/p>\n
Lohum said the move expands its presence across the critical \u200bminerals value \u200bchain, complementing \u2060its existing refining, advanced manufacturing and recycling businesses.<\/p>\n
Chief Executive Officer Rajat Verma \u200bsaid securing lithium supplies at the \u200bsource \u2060would help reduce battery costs and strengthen India’s electric vehicle supply chain.<\/p>\n
