A new Ebola case has been recorded in an area controlled by AFC\/M23 rebels \u200bin eastern Congo, the group said, more than two \u200cmonths after it declared the outbreak over in the territory it holds.<\/p>\n
The Rwanda-backed AFC\/M23 rebels, who control large parts \u200bof North and South Kivu provinces after staging \u200ba lightning offensive last year, declared areas \u2060under their control Ebola-free\u00a0in late June, after 21 \u200bdays without new cases.<\/p>\n
The latest case was detected in \u200bthe Kayna health zone in North Kivu, near Lubero, the rebels said in a statement on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The patient, a 21-year-old man, \u200barrived from Butembo, a city in government-held territory, \u200bthe statement said. It was not clear where he had contracted \u200cthe \u2060virus.<\/p>\n
He was identified as a suspected Ebola case at a health checkpoint on Wednesday and transferred to a quarantine facility, where tests confirmed infection the \u200bfollowing day, the rebels \u200bsaid.<\/p>\n
Health authorities \u2060said they had begun tracing contacts and stepped up surveillance to prevent further \u200bspread of the virus.<\/p>\n
Rebel-held areas had recorded \u200bonly \u2060four Ebola cases since the outbreak was declared in mid-May.<\/p>\n
