Uganda on Wednesday named its blended crude oil grade “Pearl \u200bSweet”, a key step ahead of the East African country’s \u200cplanned start of commercial oil production by the end of this year.<\/p>\n
Uganda discovered commercial crude reserves two decades ago in fields along the Albertine rift basin \u200bon its border with Democratic Republic of Congo.<\/p>\n
Commercial production has been \u200brepeatedly delayed by a lack of infrastructure and disagreements \u2060between the government and international oil companies over development plans.<\/p>\n
President Yoweri Museveni \u200bunveiled the name at a ceremony in Kikuube district, about 250 km (155 \u200bmiles) west of the capital Kampala.<\/p>\n
He said “Sweet” refers to the crude’s low sulphur content, while “Pearl” is drawn from Uganda’s description as the “Pearl of Africa”, a phrase popularised \u200bby former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.<\/p>\n
After the naming, companies developing \u200bthe fields will begin “outreach to different refineries, market intelligence activities and commercial negotiations with \u200cinterested \u2060parties,” state-owned oil firm UNOC said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Uganda’s recoverable oil reserves are estimated at 1.65 billion barrels, with peak production expected to reach 230,000 barrels per day.<\/p>\n
France’s TotalEnergies is the majority owner of the fields \u200bwith a 56.67% \u200bstake, while its \u2060partner, China’s CNOOC\u00a0holds 28.33%. UNOC owns the rest.<\/p>\n
Pearl Sweet crude will be exported through the $5 billion \u200bEast African Crude Oil Pipeline, a 1,443-km (897-mile) link from \u200bUganda’s oilfields \u2060to the Tanzanian port of Tanga on the Indian Ocean coast. The pipeline is billed as the world’s longest electrically heated crude oil pipeline.<\/p>\n
Pearl \u2060Sweet broadly \u200bmatches the characteristics of similar waxy and \u200bsweet blends like Chad’s Doba and South Sudan and Sudan’s Nile and Dar crudes, UNOC \u200bsaid.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
