{"id":21927,"date":"2026-09-01T15:26:56","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T15:26:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=21927"},"modified":"2026-09-01T15:26:56","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T15:26:56","slug":"positive-developments-expected-after-imf-mission-to-senegal-source-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/21927\/positive-developments-expected-after-imf-mission-to-senegal-source-says\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Positive developments&#8217; expected after IMF mission to Senegal, source says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Discussions between Senegal&#8217;s government and the International Monetary Fund have \u200cbeen constructive and &#8220;positive developments&#8221; are expected at the conclusion of a mission on Tuesday, a person close to the matter told Reuters on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The fund began its current mission on August 19 as part of \u200btalks about a replacement loan for the $1.8 billion programme it suspended in 2024 \u200bafter President Bassirou Diomaye Faye&#8217;s government disclosed far more debt than previously \u2060reported.<\/p>\n<p>The talks have been contentious, with former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko saying in \u200bNovember that the IMF was pushing for restructuring and that such a move would be \u200ba &#8220;disgrace&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Faye fired Sonko in May, but Sonko was subsequently appointed president of the National Assembly, a post that could permit him to complicate implementation of reforms required under a new IMF programme.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The mission has \u200bmade substantial progress, and discussions with the authorities continue in a constructive spirit. As \u200bwith any IMF-supported programme, any staff-level agreement would be announced through the Fund&#8217;s established processes,&#8221; an IMF \u200cspokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fund \u2060staff and the authorities are working closely to conclude the remaining elements and ensure that any eventual agreement rests on a strong and durable foundation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The IMF has estimated the extra debt disclosed in 2024 at more than $11 billion based on end-2023 numbers. Some analysts \u200bput it closer \u200bto $13 billion, more than \u2060a quarter of total debt.<\/p>\n<p>To secure an IMF programme, Senegal needs to address the &#8220;hidden debt&#8221; fallout, agree upon a credible plan \u200bto stabilise its finances and resolve how to deal with its \u200bdebt burden.<\/p>\n<p>\u2060Senegal last received financing from the IMF in late 2023.
