Tanzania’s ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party has picked the energy minister as its nominee for the \u200bnew vice president, the party’s secretary general said \u200clate on Wednesday, after the incumbent announced his\u00a0resignation\u00a0less than a year into the job.<\/p>\n
Outgoing Vice President Emmanuel John Nchimbi will leave office \u200bon September 4, having served since last November. His \u200bresignation followed criticism from some in the party for \u2060remarks about the constitution last month that they considered unnecessary.<\/p>\n
The \u200bruling party’s National Executive Committee has now picked Deogratius Ndejembi \u200bfor nomination as the next vice president, ruling party secretary general Asha-Rose Migiro told reporters.<\/p>\n
NEC “has unanimously approved that member to take the position of \u200bVice President. This will take place after completing the constitutional \u200bprocedures that require his name to be submitted to Parliament,” Migiro said.<\/p>\n
Ndejembi \u200cwould \u2060be sworn in after he has been approved by parliament, she added.<\/p>\n
She said the ruling party had also decided to expel Nchimbi from the party “due to conduct that violated our regulations \u200bregarding discipline and \u200bethics”. She \u2060did not say what conduct violated the party’s rules.<\/p>\n
Last month Nchimbi urged Tanzanians to fight \u200bfor a new constitution, “a constitution that leads us \u200btoward development, \u2060not just material and economic development, but the development of dignity and the human worth of every person living in Tanzania,” \u2060he \u200bsaid.<\/p>\n
