{"id":21899,"date":"2026-08-27T11:53:31","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T11:53:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=21899"},"modified":"2026-08-27T11:53:31","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T11:53:31","slug":"rwanda-secures-first-yen-denominated-loan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/21899\/rwanda-secures-first-yen-denominated-loan\/","title":{"rendered":"Rwanda secures first yen-denominated loan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rwanda has raised roughly $190 million with a new 15-year World Bank Group-backed loan that will see the \u200bgovernment borrow in Japanese yen for the first \u200ctime, as well as in euros.<\/p>\n<p>The country&#8217;s finance ministry said the money would be used for &#8220;general budgetary purposes&#8221; and go towards infrastructure improvements, \u200bhealth and education as well as agriculture and \u200bother industries.<\/p>\n<p>Roughly half of the money is being borrowed \u2060in yen, marking the first time Rwanda has raised \u200bdebt in the Japanese currency.<\/p>\n<p>The finance ministry said it would \u200bhelp diversify its currency base and signalled the country&#8217;s &#8220;readiness for deeper engagement with JPY-denominated capital and investors in Asia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the loan \u200bconstituted an \u20ac82 million ($95.55 million) tranche.<\/p>\n<p>It also has an initial \u200bsix-year &#8220;grace period&#8221; meaning the government won&#8217;t make any repayments on the new \u200cloan \u2060until after its only outstanding international market $620 million bond is due to mature in August 2031.<\/p>\n<p>The new loan benefits from two World Bank Group guarantees &#8211; one from the Multilateral Investment \u200bGuarantee Agency \u200band another an \u2060International Development Association &#8220;Policy-Based Guarantee&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In a report in May, ratings agency S&amp;P said Rwanda&#8217;s debt structure \u200bremains relatively favourable. Its debt-to-GDP ratio has \u200bdipped to \u206072.4% from 73.1% in 2024 and is projected to decline further in the next few years.<\/p>\n<p>S&amp;P estimates roughly 90% of \u2060Rwanda&#8217;s \u200bexternal debt is highly concessional, which \u200bhelps contain its financing costs and its &#8220;rollover&#8221; risks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rwanda has raised roughly $190 million with a new 15-year World Bank Group-backed loan that will see the \u200bgovernment borrow in Japanese yen for the first \u200ctime, as well as in euros.
