Two U.N. peacekeepers from Ethiopia were killed and seven other people injured in an \u200bambush on Monday in South Sudan’s Jonglei State, bringing \u200cto nine the number of peacekeepers killed in the line of duty worldwide this year, the United Nations said.<\/p>\n
Among the injured were three U.N. peacekeepers, two \u200bpolice officers from South Sudan and two civilian staff members, \u200bU.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told a press briefing.<\/p>\n
He said \u2060the attack was carried out by unidentified gunmen and the patrol \u200bappeared to have been deliberately targeted.<\/p>\n
“These are part of regular patrols that \u200bthe U.N. has been doing in trying to help the constant insecurity in the area,” Dujarric said.<\/p>\n
The U.N. has called on relevant authorities for a thorough \u200band prompt investigation to ensure all those responsible are brought to \u200bjustice, Dujarric said. He stressed that “attacks against U.N. peacekeepers may constitute war crimes \u200cunder \u2060international law.”<\/p>\n
The latest violence “brings to nine the number of peacekeepers killed in malicious acts since January 1 of this year,” he added.<\/p>\n
Attacks on U.N. personnel are rare but not unprecedented in South Sudan, where \u200bU.N. patrols operate \u200bin volatile areas \u2060affected by intercommunal fighting, armed youth mobilizations and clashes involving government forces.<\/p>\n
In June, the U.N. Security Council \u200badopted a resolution aimed at\u00a0strengthening accountability for attacks on \u200bU.N. \u2060peacekeepers, amid concern over rising violence and low prosecution rates.<\/p>\n
That followed a series of incidents targeting U.N. personnel, including the\u00a0killing of seven peacekeepers serving \u2060with \u200bthe United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon\u00a0\u200bafter a fresh round of fighting broke out between Israel and Hezbollah in early \u200bMarch.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
