The AFC\/M23 rebel alliance in Democratic Republic of Congo, which has highlighted its ability to tackle the spread of Ebola \u200bin territory it controls, has said it will impose \u200cnew restrictions on people’s movements to and from Ebola-affected government-held zones.<\/p>\n
Shared taxis on the road between Goma and Kirumba will be suspended for one \u200bmonth, starting from Saturday, as will pirogue boats carrying passengers \u200bon certain routes on Lake Edward, said the statement, \u2060issued late on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Taxi-buses will still be allowed to operate \u200bon the Goma-Kirumba road, subject to health and safety controls, as \u200bwill trucks used for transporting goods.<\/p>\n
The new measure was introduced after two travellers from the government-held town of Lubero tested positive for Ebola in a \u200bvillage under M23 control, a member of the response team \u200bset up by rebel authorities told Reuters.<\/p>\n
The move underscores the complexity of responding \u200cto \u2060what health officials have described as the fastest-spreading Ebola outbreak on record amid continued hostilities between Congo and the Rwanda-backed rebel group.<\/p>\n
The AFC\/M23 rebels\u00a0control\u00a0large parts of North and South Kivu provinces \u200bfollowing their early \u200b2025 advance, during \u2060which they captured Goma and Bukavu, eastern Congo’s two largest cities. The United Nations and Western \u200bgovernments say the group is\u00a0backed by Rwanda, which \u200bKigali denies.<\/p>\n
The \u2060rebels have used this year’s Ebola outbreak to\u00a0demonstrate their administration\u00a0in eastern Congo, mounting a response largely separate from authorities in Kinshasa.<\/p>\n
