Kenya Airways\u00a0said on Wednesday that the Middle East conflict had driven up its fuel costs by 72% in \u200bthe first half of this year and caused delays \u200cto supplies of spare parts and plane maintenance.<\/p>\n
One of Africa’s largest airlines, Kenya Airways is due to announce its 2026 half-year results early next week.<\/p>\n
“We \u200bhave been heavily impacted by the war with the fuel \u200bprices rising by 72% in the current half year,” \u2060acting CEO George Kamal told journalists in Nairobi, adding that \u200bfuel now accounted for up to 50% of all costs.<\/p>\n
He said \u200bthe airline was also grappling with delayed aircraft parts deliveries, reduced aircraft availability and a global rise in inflation and that those factors would impact its \u200brevenue.<\/p>\n
Kamal said although the global backlog in aircraft supplies was \u200baffecting many operators, Kenya Airways’ small fleet of 40 planes means it was \u200cbeing \u2060severely affected.<\/p>\n
“We have demand, every route we deploy … it’s full so we need the aircraft as soon as possible,” he said. The airline is awaiting delivery of two Boeing 737 planes while another \u200btwo that were \u200bdue for delivery \u2060in April were rejected after failing inspection tests, he said.<\/p>\n
Last year, Kenya Airways\u00a0reported a pre-tax\u00a0loss \u200bof 17.93 billion Kenyan shillings ($138.56 million) on lower revenues \u200bafter \u2060a rare profit the previous period.<\/p>\n
“We are reviewing every single contract at KQ (Kenya Airways) and finding how to save every dollar because our \u2060profit \u200bper seat is just $1.50 and we have \u200bto save every dollar we make,” he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
