A federal judge on Friday cleared the way for U.S. President\u00a0Donald Trump’s\u00a0administration to strip nearly 1,100 Somalis of legal protections against deportation that \u200bhave allowed them to live and work in the United States.<\/p>\n
U.S. \u200cDistrict Judge Allison Burroughs in Boston allowed the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to terminate the Temporary Protected Status designation for Somalia after the U.S. Supreme Court \u200bin June allowed the administration to end similar protections\u00a0for thousands of \u200bpeople from Haiti and Syria.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0Supreme Court’s ruling, powered by its \u20606-3 conservative majority, curtailed the ability of judges to review DHS efforts \u200bunder Trump to end TPS designations for 13 countries that provided humanitarian \u200bimmigration protection to eligible migrants from those nations.<\/p>\n
Lawyers for the plaintiffs and DHS did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n
Two other judges last week allowed the administration to\u00a0similarly end \u200bTPS\u00a0for South Sudan and Myanmar. Only the end of TPS for \u200bEthiopia remains blocked by a judge.<\/p>\n
Former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in January announced \u200cplans \u2060to end TPS for Somalis, arguing Somalia’s conditions had improved,\u00a0despite ongoing fighting\u00a0between Somali forces and al-Shabaab militants.<\/p>\n
Burroughs, an appointee of Democratic President Barack Obama, in March blocked Noem’s decision from taking effect in a lawsuit brought \u200bby four Somalis \u200band two advocacy \u2060groups including African Communities Together.<\/p>\n
The plaintiffs argued the administration sought to end TPS for Somalia due to bias \u200bagainst non-white immigrants, pointing to Trump’s past descriptions of \u200bSomalis as “garbage” \u2060and “low IQ people.”<\/p>\n
