{"id":21718,"date":"2026-08-10T13:30:31","date_gmt":"2026-08-10T13:30:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=21718"},"modified":"2026-08-10T13:30:31","modified_gmt":"2026-08-10T13:30:31","slug":"south-sudanese-whistleblower-released-after-nearly-two-months-in-detention-family-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/21718\/south-sudanese-whistleblower-released-after-nearly-two-months-in-detention-family-says\/","title":{"rendered":"South Sudanese whistleblower released after nearly two months in detention, family says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A South Sudanese whistleblower who was\u00a0abducted in Kenya\u00a0in June and taken \u200bto South Sudan has been released \u200cafter nearly two months in detention, his family said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Athorbey Al-Gaddhaffy-Dit returned to Kenya&#8217;s capital \u200bNairobi on Saturday and is receiving \u200bmedical treatment after his health deteriorated in \u2060detention in the South Sudanese capital Juba, \u200bthe family said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Gaddhaffy-Dit, who \u200balso holds Kenyan citizenship, was seized by armed, masked men after leaving a casino on the outskirts \u200bof Nairobi in early June, according to \u200ba report filed to police by his wife at \u200cthe \u2060time that cited witness accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi said in June that Gaddhaffy-Dit had told him in April that he shared \u200binformation about \u200ballegations of \u2060high-level corruption in South Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>South Sudan\u2019s government spokesperson, Ateny Wek Ateny, \u200bdid not immediately respond to a \u200brequest \u2060for comment.<\/p>\n<p>South Sudan&#8217;s government has regularly dismissed accusations of systematic human rights abuses and \u2060widespread \u200bcorruption.<\/p>\n<p>Kenyan and South Sudanese officials \u200bsaid in June they were not aware of Al-Gaddhaffy-Dit&#8217;s \u200bdisappearance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A South Sudanese whistleblower who was\u00a0abducted in Kenya\u00a0in June and taken \u200bto South Sudan has been released \u200cafter nearly two months in detention, his family said on Monday.
