{"id":21707,"date":"2026-08-09T15:00:58","date_gmt":"2026-08-09T15:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=21707"},"modified":"2026-08-09T15:00:58","modified_gmt":"2026-08-09T15:00:58","slug":"infantino-finds-a-friend-in-africa-as-caf-backs-fifa-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/21707\/infantino-finds-a-friend-in-africa-as-caf-backs-fifa-president\/","title":{"rendered":"Infantino finds a friend in Africa as CAF backs FIFA president"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Confederation of African Football\u2019s \u200bExecutive Committee unanimously confirmed its support for beleaguered FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Thursday, at \u200codds with its counterparts in Europe, North America and Asia.<\/p>\n<p>On the day UEFA said it is\u00a0committed to boycotting future World Cups\u00a0at all levels while Infantino remains in office, CAF&#8217;s top decision-making body sided with the FIFA president as he seeks \u200bre-election in March next year.<\/p>\n<p>CAF makes up 54 of FIFA\u2019s 211 member associations, and is a \u200bpowerful voting bloc that has largely supported Infantino since he took office in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The \u2060CAF EXCO unanimously reconfirmed its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino and thanked him for his support for \u200bAfrican football over the years,&#8221; CAF said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>CAF president Patrice Motsepe welcomed\u00a0FIFA\u2019s pledge\u00a0to review the \u200bprocesses that led to the controversy which sparked the fiercest revolt of Infantino&#8217;s tenure as national federations complained they had been sidelined over the abandoned proposal to sell a slice of the World Cup&#8217;s commercial future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;CAF welcomes and endorses the &#8220;Joint Update&#8221; by \u200bFIFA President Gianni Infantino and Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom,&#8221; Motsepe said, but stressed the need for good governance \u200band transparency in global football.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are committed to continue working together with FIFA, its member associations, other football Confederations and \u200cstakeholders to \u2060safeguard and adhere to governance, due process, and transparency global best practises and to contribute to the development and growth of football worldwide.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>CAF\u2019s support will provide some relief to Infantino, who has faced near global condemnation for his aborted plan to establish the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) and sell commercial rights to the World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier \u200bthis week, five of Africa\u2019s \u200bmost influential football leaders\u00a0issued \u2060statements in support of Infantino, while also welcoming the decision to drop his controversial plan to sell a stake in future World Cup revenue.<\/p>\n<p>CAF Vice President Fouzi \u200bLekjaa from Morocco and fellow FIFA Council members Hany Abo Rida (Egypt), Hamidou Djibrilla (Niger) and \u200bAhmed Yahya (Mauritania) \u2060all pledged to support Infantino.<\/p>\n<p>Veron Mosengo-Omba, recently elected president of the football federation in the Democratic Republic of Congo and former CAF general secretary, also lent his voice in support.<\/p>\n<p>Motsepe was also effusive in his praise for Infantino \u2060days before \u200bthe World Cup sell-off scandal broke.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I personally support Gianni Infantino,&#8221; he \u200bsaid. &#8220;He&#8217;s not just a good friend. He&#8217;s a loyal friend. He&#8217;s loyal to Africa.
